NEW YORK, NEW YORK, USA, October 31, 2018 / — North/South Consonance, Inc. kicks off its 39th consecutive season of free-admission concerts on Sunday afternoon November 11 when the North/South Chamber Orchestra will perform four compositions by Max Lifchitz – the ensemble’s founder and director.

The free-admission event will start at 3 PM and end approximately at 4:30 PM. It will be held at the auditorium of Christ and St. Stephen’s Church (120 West 69th Street) in Manhattan. The auditorium is ADA accessible. No tickets or reservations needed.

A native of Mexico City, Mr. Lifchitz came to New York 1966 to pursue musical training at The Juilliard School. His works have been performed throughout the country and abroad meriting grants from the ASCAP, Ford and Guggenheim Foundations; the New York State Council on the Arts Individual Artists Program; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Also active as pianist, Mr. Lifchitz was awarded first prize in the 1976 Gaudeamus Competition held in Holland and has toured throughout Latin America under the auspices of the US Fund for Artists at International Festivals.

The concert will feature four compositions by Mr. Lifchitz:

Expressions, written in 1983 on commission from a community orchestra in Wisconsin

Brightness Aloft inspired by a lilting Mexican carol celebrating the arrival of the New Year in 2015

Fire Within composed during the waning months of 2017 in reaction to the dismaying events that transpired in Charlottesville, VA.

Forget Me Not, a song cycle completed in 1974 dealing with descriptions of nature as well as feelings of loss, euphoria and gaiety based on poetry by the 19th century American writer Lillian E. Curtis.

Renowned soprano Sandra Moon will be the soloist for this work. Ms. Moon has appeared on some of the most prestigious operatic stages including the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. With over 100 operatic roles in her repertoire, Ms. Moon has been invited to sing in numerous opera houses including those of Cologne, Dresden, Linz, Munich, Bonn, Leipzig, Paris, and Vienna.

Since its inception in 1980, the North/South Consonance, Inc. has brought to the attention of the New York City public over 1,000 works by composers hailing from the Americas and elsewhere representing a wide spectrum of aesthetic views. An 8-carat natural Colombian square-cut emerald, with good clarity and provenance, has an estimate of $25,000-$35,000; and a dazzling pair of Van Cleef & Arpels Snowflake Lampion diamond platinum earrings, having 98 diamonds with a total weight of 5.79 ctw, ranging from F to VS, should bring $15,000-$20,000.

An enormous original oil on foam core board painting by Romero Britto (Brazilian, b. 1963), depicting the sun rising over the water, signed upper left and so large (at almost 8 feet long) it can be folded in half, is estimated at $5,000-$10,000. Also, a monumental pair of bronze Sphinx sculptures, each one about 43 ½ inches long and 26 ½ inches tall, should realize $3,000-$6,000.

Another Day 1 bronze is the 11 ½ inch tall (with base) original maquette, or 3-D study, by Bill Mack (American, b. 1949), titled Tranquility (1996), signed and numbered (“15/150”), and atop a revolving black marble base (est. $1,000-$3,000). Another lot to watch is a pair of gold gilt bronze and lapis French candelabra, 44 inches tall by 16 ½ inches wide (est. $7,000-$10,000).

Star lots of the Day 2 session should include an early Bronze Age (early Spedos variety), circa 2500 BC Cycladic marble figure of a reclining female, 5 ½ inches tall and excavated from the Green Islands (est. $2,000-$4,000); and an important 19th century Japanese Imperial vase shaped in its entirety as a forest, with 3-D birds and a scenic interior, 9 ¾ inches tall (est. $750-$1,500).

Two Egyptian lots carry identical estimates of $750-$1,500. One is a green porphyrite pharaoh’s head, a rare archaeological tomb piece, circa 16th Dynasty, overall 4 ½ inches tall on a base. The other is a limestone carved stele (standing slab with hieroglyphic carving or sculptured design), depicting the figures Isis and Osiris, carved on both sides, 8 ½ inches in height including base.

For those who prefer to wear their antiquities, there is a Spanish “Piece of 8” coin salvaged from the 1622 Atocha shipwreck, mounted in a round pendant and hanging on a 20-inch sterling silver necklace (est. $1,250-$2,500); and a scarce New Zealand green nephrite Hei-Tiki Maori tribal ancestor pendant, measuring nearly 3 inches in length and weighing 38 grams (est. $400-$800).

Sears Holdings, which owns the Sears and Kmart department stores, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy October 14th as a final effort to save two dying retail concepts. At the time the company said it was closing 142 stores nationwide — including 16 in California. The company has since filed legal notices with the state reporting 1,211 layoffs at 15 stores in California by year’s end. It hopes it can stay open during the holiday season as it seeks to reorganize, but these events have been a long time coming.

Clark believes that it can all be traced back to financial planner Eddie Lampert’s poor business decisions. In 2003, Lampert bought the bonds of the failing discount retailer Kmart and converted those bonds into a controlling position in Kmart’s equity, merging Kmart with Sears, who back then was a conservatively run but still thriving nationwide retailer. However, he decided not to invest the capital needed to refurbish the Sears and Kmart stores to keep their inventory and appearance fresh. Instead, he made a huge gamble to invest in Sears’s website and online shopping. He was too early, and the Sears customer base never cottoned to shopping online, instead moving to more popular websites such as Amazon over the following years.

“I hope that this can serve as a wake-up call for any small-business owners out there who find themselves attempting to sell ice to Eskimos,” concludes Clark.
