Mayor Neil M. O’Leary of Waterbury, Connecticut stated that, “Connecticut has a statewide Fatherhood Initiative that promotes healthy lives and healthy family relationships. I commend the Men’s Health Network for supporting all aspects of men’s health nationwide.”

Mayor Shari Cantor of West Hartford, Connecticut continued that, “West Hartford is proud to support Men’s Health Network’s mission of building public awareness around the importance of a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, routine medical check-ups and preventative health practices such as early detection for everyone.”

The importance of this effort was also highlighted by a statement from the White House.

Raising awareness of the need for men and boys to live healthy lifestyles is critical to their wellbeing. The life expectancy for men is five years less than women, and men also have higher rates of death from cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports women are 100% more likely to visit their doctor for annual exams and preventative services than men.

Report cards on the status of male health in each state can be found at the State of Men's Health website. Proclamations from every state be found at www.MensHealthMonth.com

“We applaud officials in their states for helping raise awareness of the health issues facing men and their families by recognizing this year’s men’s health awareness period,” said Ana Fadich, MPH, CHES, Vice President, Men’s Health Network, “communities around the globe continue to promote the health and well-being of men and boys throughout the month of June. We hope this year’s awareness period will help men and their families be more mindful of their health starting with a doctor’s appointment.”

Across the country, hundreds of health care professionals, private corporations, faith-based organizations, community groups, and other interested organizations help plan activities and events that focus on men’s health during June, and throughout the year. On June 15, MHN encourages participation in using the #ShowUsYourBlue hashtag on social media where participants raised awareness about men’s health issues by Wearing BLUE.

This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of National Men’s Health Week, as part of the larger awareness period of Men’s Health Month. The legislation was sponsored by Senator Bob Dole and Congressman Bill Richardson and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on May 31, 1994.

Men’s Health Month and Men’s Health Week are organized by Men's Health Network MHN), an international non-profit organization whose mission is to reach men, boys, and their families where they live, work, play, and pray with health prevention messages and tools, screening programs, educational materials, advocacy opportunities, and patient navigation. Photography in the Dolomites

At the Stunning ADLER Lodge ALPE, Guests Will Learn
the Art of Photography

ALPE DE SUISI, ITALY, June 27, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — At the Stunning ADLER Lodge ALPE, Guests Will Learn
the Art of Photography
Photo pro will teach composition, lighting and portraiture

It's hard to imagine a better photographic backdrop than Italy. For passionate amateur shutterbugs looking to turn their lenses on truly spectacular subjects in Italy's Dolomites mountain region, ADLER Lodge ALPE, an intimate spa hotel that has been praised recently by the New York Times, is offering the “Portrait & Landscape Photography” workshop from November 10 through 17, 2019. The experience, which is taught by professional photographer Florian Andergassen (IG: florian_andergassen, http://florianandergassen.com/)
is designed for those who would like to use their SLR camera in a more targeted and versatile way, which will help them move from simply shooting snapshots to learning the art of creative image composition. Andergassen is known for his captivating portraits as well as his incredible images of food and landscapes, and will offer his expert insight on the following topics:

• Basic camera settings and functions
• Decisive moments in photography: design principles and image composition
• How to recognize and master lighting situations and moods
• Tricks for the optimal image composition in landscape and portrait photography

Guests will find themselves immersed in nature with a seemingly infinite amount of subject matter, learning both new approaches to photography and how to get the most from their cameras. Each day they will take both interior and outdoor photos, and have the chance to present them to the group for discussion. Guests will have a hard time deciding what they love to photograph the most: The jagged mountain peaks (especially during golden sunsets), expansive Alpine meadows, exquisitely plated meals or the compelling portraits created with help from a professional model.

The workshop is best suited for beginners, who should bring an SLR camera with an interchangeable lens (a laptop and tripod are optional). Smartphones and compact cameras are not permitted for the workshop.

Prices start at €784 per person for a three-night weekend stay or €920 for a four-night stay, and include three daily meals, afternoon tea, soft drinks, wines and liqueurs, and many activities.

New York Times has written that the hotel “mirrors the rustic little dwellings of its neighbors, but in palatial form,” The hotel consists of a main building with 18 junior suites, as well as 12 private, freestanding chalets, modeled after classic mountain huts, dotted throughout the property. The main reception area is home to a 40-foot–high totem by Adolf Vallazza, the world-famous wood sculptor.

The majestically beautiful Alpe di Siusi is as important to the story of ADLER Lodge ALPE as its luxurious rooms and expert staff. Although skiers are lured by the nearby world-famous runs during winter, each season is unforgettable. Spring brings the sounds of birdsong and views of brightly colored meadows covered with wildflowers like orchids, crocuses and edelweiss. During the lush, green summers, the soft breezes and abundant sunshine make it easy to stay active all day. The alpenglow is a famous autumn phenomenon that guests love to observe during cocktail hour. Right before sunset, the mountain walls begin to glow with a gorgeous mix of orange, red and violet hues.

The Alpine Spa is set in its own loft within the main building; it’s home to a hay sauna, fitness center and windows offering panoramic views of the rolling meadows and jagged Dolomite peaks. The staff takes pride in helping guests choose treatments that are best suited to their preferences, such as facials, peels, massages, body wraps and wooden tub baths. There are also several combination options (called “rituals”) that mix several different treatments for a truly sublime experience.

The per-night pricing structure, which the hotel calls “inclusive arrangement,” covers just about everything. It includes three daily meals, afternoon tea, soft drinks (think bottled mineral water and fresh juice), wines and liqueurs. Although treatments cost extra, guests can enter the spa to use its saunas and heated outdoor pool, which is open year-round. Guided activities such as skiing, hiking, mountain biking and sunset yoga—not to mention equipment rentals—are also covered.

Scientology Information Center Hosts Live Dramatic Reading of Pulp Fiction's “Murder Afloat”

The L. Ron Hubbard East Coast Theatre actors performed the murder mystery pulp fiction story, “Murder Afloat” on June 22nd at the Scientology Information Center in Downtown Clearwater in the historic Bank Building.

The whole feel of the event was that you were transported back to that time, before technology, when people entertained people and you had to use your imagination.”

— Bob Dobin, guest at Scientology Information Center's Fiction Reading

CLEARWATER, FL, US, June 27, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The L. Ron Hubbard East Coast Theater brought the pulp fiction story “Murder Afloat” to a packed house in the century-old Clearwater Building in the downtown Clearwater Scientology Information Center on June 22nd as an old-time radio show theater performance.

"Murder Afloat" is the story of a daring Narcotics operative on the ill-fated SS Cubana, hot on the trail of a million and a half dollars worth of heroin while trying to solve a string of murders in its wake.

"In true Hubbard style, the story's intrigue and suspense, craftily portrayed by the performers, left the audience guessing ‘whodunnit’ until the very end,” said Ms. Amber Skjelset, the Scientology Information Center Manager.

"Back in the ‘30s and ‘40s before live streaming and television, radio was king. Mr. Hubbard's fiction stories lend themselves beautifully to radio-style plays," said Joanie Sigal, East Coast Golden Age Theatre producer and singer. “Mr. Hubbard’s stories cover a wide range of genres—action, romance, mystery, adventure, science fiction, western, suspense, fantasy and more.”

L. Ron Hubbard was among the most prolific and popular writers through the Golden Age of Pulp Fiction. Indeed, between 1934 and 1940, some 140 L. Ron Hubbard tales appeared in the pages of legendary pulp magazines—often as many as three titles an issue and bylined under some fifteen pen names. With 19 New York Times bestsellers and more than 350 million copies of his works in circulation, Mr. Hubbard is among the most acclaimed and widely read authors of our time.

One guest, Bob Dobin said of the performance, “The whole feel of the event was that you were transported back to that time, before technology, when people entertained people and you had to use your imagination.”

Another attendee, said, “What a unique performance! I loved the action and suspense. It was quite entertaining.”

“We take the characters and the flair of the era to heart when we re-enact these stories,” said Kathy Sweigart, the theater’s Director. “Add in talented actors with varied accents and voices plus a touch of costumes for visual effect and you have a great show. L. Ron Hubbard’s stories are so creative and imaginative they provide us a wonderful opportunity to get our artistic juices flowing and deliver a truly professional and highly entertaining performance.”

The theater troupe’s next old-time radio-show reading performance will be the humorous sci-fi story, The Professor Was a Thief, on Saturday, August 24th at the Scientology Information Center.

The L. Ron Hubbard East Coast Theater is a volunteer group founded in 2011 and delivers classic radio theatre performances of fiction short stories written by L. Ron Hubbard in the 1930s and ‘40s.

The Scientology Information Center:

The Scientology Information Center, located in the Historic Clearwater Building in downtown Clearwater, opened on July 11, 2015, and currently houses a gallery of audiovisual displays with some 400 videos. The Center is open to all and provides a self-guided tour showing basic Scientology beliefs, Churches around the world, ongoing social programs, and the life of L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology's founder. The Center offers tours to the broad public and civic leaders; holds concerts, theatrical performances, and receptions for the community; and opens up the use of its conference room to social, civic and non-profit groups. For more information on Scientology, visit www.scientology.org or the Scientology Network on DirecTV channel 320, or streaming at www.scientology.tv or apps at AppleTV, fireTV, and ROKU.

Enjoy Summer Camp and Sharpen Skills with Brainfuse, Entirely Online!

Brainfuse Summer Skills Camp

Brainfuse Reviews Offers Focus on Skills to Avoid Loss of Academic Skills During Summer

NEW YORK , NEW YORK, USA, June 26, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — During the summer months, Brainfuse offers a unique online summer skills camp to keep kids’ brains sharp through the long summer months. Just because ice cream cones are melting doesn’t mean kids’ brains should be getting mushy as well!

Brainfuse Reviews is one of the nation’s leading online tutoring providers, serving students of all ages. The summer camp is tailored to elementary, middle school and high school students. Classes offered include math, science, social studies and language arts.

Brainfuse offers real-time online tutoring and career assistance from expert instructors. It is available in libraries, schools, higher education institutions and workforce centers throughout the United States and Canada. But Brainfuse Reviews is not just for tutoring during the school year! Skills Camp from Brainfuse seeks to avoid “summer slide,” when students lose academic skills over the summer, which is one of the most significant causes of the academic achievement gap.

Skills Camp does not provide a comprehensive survey of each academic topic, however, or overwhelm students with information. Rather, Brainfuse uses Skills Camp to focus on areas that are academically significant, areas that generated the most tutoring questions over the course of the school year and topics that do not require a significant time commitment over summer vacation.

For students who do want a comprehensive survey of an academic topic, Brainfuse offers SkillSurfer, which fills that need. Skills Camp focuses on letting students spend a small amount of time on academics during the summer, which research has shown makes a difference when they go back to school in the fall.

With the Brainfuse Online Summer Skills Camp, students can take part in lessons, activities, games and flashcards, which are designed to make learning fun. Students aren’t stuck sitting in front of a computer for most of the day when they’d rather be outside. Rather, this Brainfuse Reviews program lets students learn the most important information in small, digestible chunks.

Much of the content has a button at the top that allows users to connect with a live tutor, use the writing lab or send in a question to Brainfuse instructors. There is also a section for parents to help their children with summer learning, so parents can be part of the process and make learning fun for the whole family.

Additionally, the Brainfuse Summer Skills Camp offers test prep classes, so if your child is taking the PSAT, SAT, ACT or AP classes soon, they can sharpen their skills from the comfort of home and feel prepared when test day comes. Visit brainfuse.com to learn more.

Critics Say Standard Dairy Practice of Removing Calf from Mother is Cruel.

After horrific calf/cow abuse scandal at Coca-Cola/Fairlife supplier Fair Oaks Farms, demonstrators in cow masks will hold up a dozen cruelty-free alternatives

I keep my mouth shut most of the time about this….but man… if you can watch the videos that I just posted…”

— Billie Eilish, "Ocean Eyes" Singer

MARINA DEL REY, CA, UNITED STATES, June 26, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Hollywood actors, authors, social media influencers, nutritionists and everyday consumers will converge on Santa Monica tonight/Wednesday at 7pm (3rd Street and Broadway) to send a dramatic message to Coca-Cola' s CEO James Quincey: kick dairy to the curb. The explosive undercover investigation by Animal Recovery Mission shows horrific, sadistic abuse of calves and cows – all caught on video – at Coca-Cola/Fairlife's longtime "humane" supplier Fair Oaks Farms. Demonstrators, wearing cow masks, will symbolically speak up for these voiceless, helpless animals by holding up a dozen plant-based milk cartons and begging CEO Quincey to do the right thing: switch to plant-based milk! Among those speaking tonight: actresses Fia Perera and Simone Reyes, nutritionist Lisa Karlan and New York Times bestselling author/journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell.

Los Angeles Protest:
Wednesday, June 26th, 7-9pm
Santa Monica's 3rd Street Promenade (Broadway & Third)

This week, after watching the undercover Fair Oaks video, "Ocean Eyes" singer Billie Eilish begged her 26 million Instagram followers to "be smarter" and go plant-based, noting animals are being "… fully tortured."

As Fairlife and Coca-Cola are hit with another wave of lawsuits over these gut wrenching videos, grassroots protests are spreading across America and even to the United Kingdom! See the events pages below with upcoming protests in London, Houston, Connecticut, Portland and New York City! Still more demonstrations are in the planning stages. A wide array of animal welfare and environmental groups, under the banner Coalition Against Cruelty, are demanding Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey immediately take steps to cut his beverage company's ties with the cruel and environmentally unsustainable dairy industry.

The Coalition Against Cruelty urges Coca-Cola to switch to healthier, more environmentally friendly and cruelty-free plant-based milks. Coca-Cola's own website states, "Fairlife is a partnership between The Coca-Cola Company and Select Milk Producers Inc. Coca-Cola distributes Fairlife products." Fairlife has become embroiled in scandal in the wake of Animal Recovery Mission's explosive undercover investigation of Fairlife Milk's longtime supplier Fair Oaks Farms. The video shows calves being hit, dragged, shot, sat on, left on dead piles and, in other ways, subjected to nightmarish abuse. All this while Coca-Cola insists, in its written material, its partnership with Fairlife is based on "…exceptional cow care, smart and responsible farming, and sustainable agriculture."

Demonstrators implore CEO Quincey to consider the reality: the dairy industry is inherently cruel. For humans to drink cow's milk, cows must be impregnated and – after giving birth – separated from their babies, who would otherwise drink the mother's milk nature intended for them. This is why the Animal Recovery Mission's video shows rows upon rows of calves in hutches, alone, away from their mothers. Protesters point out the obvious. The calves become despondent and don't want to drink the replacement fluid from the rubber nipples. Workers are tasked with getting them to drink it. Frustration ensues, creating an environment ripe for abuse. This is why undercover investigations at dairy farms routinely undercover abuse. No "review" will change the fundamental cruelty of the dairy industry. No arrest of low level workers will get to the heart of the malignancy at the core of this process.

No desperate attempts to blame the messenger will mask the industry's harsh realities. Indeed, that will only confirm the moral bankruptcy of the industry's doublespeak, where shock is expressed over dead piles brazenly left out in the open, where people who systematically exploit animals feign heartbreak and blame underlings when exposed. The playbook has become worn and the world is getting wise to it.

Demonstrators will perform street theater where they will display the readily-available alternatives to cruelty-filled cow's milk. Holding cartons of almond, soy, cashew, oat, rice and hemp milk, demonstrators in cow masks will respectfully beg CEO Quincey, Coca-Cola North America President Jim Dinkins and Fairlife COO Tim Doelman to discard their willful ignorance and admit the obvious: their stated values of integrity and high animal welfare standards are inherently incompatible with dairy. Simply put, there is no nice way to rip a baby away from his or her mother, much less do that to tens of thousands of calves.

Coca-Cola executives have publicly revealed their strategy to premium-ize milk and, thereby, be able to charge a premium. The Coalition Against Cruelty suggests the wiser strategy would be to pivot to the products being increasingly embraced by millennials and Gen Z'ers: plant-based milks. Coca-Cola's stated corporate vision includes the following: "Be a responsible citizen that makes a difference by helping build and support sustainable communities." Animal agriculture, which includes dairy, is a leading cause of climate change, responsible for more greenhouses gases than all transportation combined.

In crisis there is opportunity. A pivot to genuine compassion and genuine sustainability would be applauded globally by animal lovers, environmentalists and consumers in general, all of whom were revolted by the video evidence of barbarism and hypocrisy. Climate change is getting worse and will soon create an economic catastrophe that will devastate all businesses including Coca-Cola. We know this switch can be done because one google search shows it is being done. Coalition Against Cruelty's protests against Coca-Cola will not end until a real change occurs. The time is now.

More than 10,000 to Turn Out TODAY, WEDNESDAY, 5:45PM, at 42nd Street and 2nd Avenue, in NYC

Three Young Orthodox Jewish Women They were Incarcerated this Week for Refusing Army Enlistment Violating their Religious Beliefs

NY, USA, June 26, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — New York – More than ten thousand Orthodox Jews will gather today, Wednesday, to protest Israel’s campaign to force Orthodox Jewish girls into military services, culminating in this week’s brutal arrest of three girls for refusing enlistment orders. The protesters will express solidarity with their brethren in Jerusalem who are demonstrating for days these arrests. They will decry Israeli Police’s brutal crackdown and arrests of tens of protesters, and will express their support for the arrested girls and will call for the end of the IDF’s tactics to entangle and entrap Orthodox Jewish girls into military service.

Israel is one of roughly a handful of countries to draft women into military service. For all these years, the Israeli government understood the opposition of Orthodox Jews to serve in the military because it is a grave violation of their religion. During recent years, the government started a campaign to coerce Orthodox Jews into military services, and in the past year it went from bad to worse, with the government’s forcing girls from vulnerable backgrounds to join the military.

This campaign is a part of an effort by the Israeli authorities to force Orthodox Jews to assimilate in the larger society. That initiative includes the imposition of annual quotas of Orthodox Jews to enlist in the army, sanctions against the community if those quotas aren’t reached, and curtailments of the exemptions that were granted since the inception of the State of Israel for Yeshiva students from conscription.

At the beginning of this week, three 22-27-year-old Orthodox girls were arrested and kept imprisoned for non-enlistment in the military. Their arrest triggered days of mass demonstrations in Jerusalem and other Israeli cities. In an effort to further destroy the spirit of Orthodox Jewry, the Israeli Police unleashed a brutal response that included the vicious beatings and the arrests of tens of peaceful demonstrators.

The mass demonstration – organized by the Central Rabbinical Congress of the USA and Canada – will take place today, Wednesday, 5:45 PM, at the Israeli Consulate in Manhattan, at Second Avenue and 42nd Street.

More than ten thousand are expected to join the demonstration to express solidarity with their religious sisters and brothers in Israel; call for the release of the three prisoners of Zion for dodging military service and the tens who were arrested for crying out on their behalf; and for an end to the anti-religious campaign by the Israeli government.
“Israel is the only country imprisoning Orthodox Jewish girls for practicing their religion. It’s a shame that we have to turn out in New York to call for a sanctuary for Jewish girls in Israel, but this is sadly a reality. The brutalities must stop,” said Rabbi Isaac Green, a CRC spokesman.

TEALEAVES and UBC Botanical Garden Reveal The Secrets to Finding Your Next Big Idea in The Garden of Secrets

Discover the Garden of Secrets Documentary, Launching worldwide June 27.

The Garden of Secrets documentary is a philanthropic project in support of botanical gardens.

The Garden of Secrets encourages viewers to look at nature from a radically different perspective.

TEALEAVES, luxury tea blender, and UBC Botanical Garden bring together leading experts worldwide in a philanthropic documentary in support of botanical gardens.

We believe that this partnership will raise the profile of botanical gardens and the importance of this critical work, helping us highlight the role plants play service of humanity and the Earth.”

— Patrick Lewis, Director of UBC Botanical Garden

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES , June 26, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Today, luxury tea brand, TEALEAVES, and UBC Botanical Garden announce the official release of a documentary from their five-year partnership entitled, The Garden of Secrets, launching today at the Conservatory of Flowers, for San Francisco Design Week. The documentary celebrates plants beyond their edible, aromatic, and medicinal properties, and explores botanical gardens as the keeper of ‘secrets’ that inspire plant-based biomimicry and biophilic solutions to the issues faced by humanity today. University of British Columbia Botanical Garden, the oldest university botanical garden in Canada, is home to a collection of 50,000 living accessions representing 7,000 different plants that provide ongoing direction and purpose for the Garden.

Through The Garden of Secrets, TEALEAVES brings together a score of innovators and activists to demonstrate how the wonders of nature – tested and perfected through millions of years of evolutionary trial and error – lend themselves to inspire brilliant solutions. Viewers are exposed to the unique approaches of designers, engineers, scientists and botanists at the forefront of plant-based biomimicry who are making a lasting impact on people, society and the environment.

“Botanical gardens like UBC Botanical Garden are ‘idea libraries,’ places where a wealth of solutions have been assembled near the doorsteps of the scientists, engineers, and designers tackling these issues,” said Patrick Lewis, Director of UBC Botanical Garden. “We are proud to be working with a loved global brand like TEALEAVES, a company committed to biodiversity and love for nature, whose inspiration aligns with our core values. We believe that this partnership will raise the profile of botanical gardens and the importance of this critical work, helping us highlight the role plants play in the service of humanity and the Earth.”

This partnership is an important step in showing the ability and responsibility of global brands to raise awareness for issues of importance while supporting brand communication and positioning goals.

“We want to help create a movement and demonstrate that any organization—whether it be from tea to technology—can adopt biomimetic methods to play their part to make the world more sustainable. Biomimicry offers a means to solve problems baked into the solution, instead of serving as a band-aid. Our unified goal is to blend our mutual love for plants and botanicals with biomimetic design to attract newfound interest in the plants that we take for granted,” says TEALEAVES CEO, Lana Sutherland.

In addition to the short 25-minute documentary, TEALEAVES will produce a series of short videos from the world of experts, which include Dr. Robert Lang, renowned origami artist and NASA physicist, Michael Pawlyn, Director of Exploration Architecture and Architect on The Eden Project, and Denis Hayes, Founder of Earth Day and President of the Bullitt Foundation. The content will serve as an inspiration bank, allowing visitors to take a deeper dive into the world of plant-inspired biomimicry and botany. The short documentary and series will be available online beginning tomorrow, June 27 at thegardenofsecrets.com/documentary. Please visit the link to learn more about the remarkable collaboration between TEALEAVES and UBC Botanical Garden.

400 years has a date at Brooklyn Bridge Park

400 year anniversary of the first enslaved Africans arriving in the English colonies during 1619 will be commemorated on Pebble Beach at Brooklyn Bridge Park

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES, June 26, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Don Victor Mooney, a resident of Queens, President, H.R. 1242 Resilience Project, will announced the date confirmed by Brooklyn Bridge Park officials to commemorate the 400 year anniversary of the first enslaved Africans arriving in the English colonies in 1619, and highlight the resilience and contributions of African Americans to the United States.

Mooney's announcement coincides with the five year anniversary of his arrival in the Caribbean by rowboat from the coast of West Africa. Mooney followed one of the many transatlantic slave trading routes his ancestors endured, which countless numbers perished in the sea. With this feat, he became the first African American to row across the Atlantic Ocean. His row was to encourage voluntary HIV testing in memory of his brother who died from AIDS.

H.R. 1242 was signed into Federal Law in 2018. Among other things, on the scheduled final day of the New York State Legislative session, the New York State Assembly voted 111 to 0 to established 400 years of African American History Commission. Historically this day also coincided with Juneteenth, which commemorated the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. State of Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America. The bill passed the New York Senate earlier this month and is awaiting Governor Andrew Cuomo signature.

Talks About Must-Have Business Skills for a Security Risk Management Program

We are honored to have Rachelle Loyear, Vice President, G4S, join us “In The Boardroom” to talk about the new G4S strategy”

— Martin Eli, Publisher

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES, June 26, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — ****************************************************************************************************************

On May 29, 2019, I performed a Google search for the words “Business Risk Management Approach” in news headlines. I got close to 5,000 results from just the previous 24 hours. I am sure I would get a similar number of results no matter when I searched. The risk management approach to business decision making is a popular topic for business executives, and certainly something that looks like it will stick around. How should the security industry get on board with the risk-based approach to managing our programs? It starts with embracing the inevitable. We WILL be expected to speak the business language in relation to our programs. We WILL need to be able to provide measurable results of risk impact, tolerance, and the effectiveness of mitigation strategies. And, we WILL need new skills and approaches to do that.

Security is More Than a Tactical Response

Change is never easy and for many of us who have been in the security industry for a while, our comfort zone is in the “nuts and bolts” of our day-to-day tactics. We know our details. We understand PTZ, CPTED, IDS, BCM, WPV, EP and any number of other technical acronyms. We know how the organization can protect people and assets from harm.

But in the world of risk-based business management, it’s the security leader who can show the reasons behind all those tactics, and the impact those tactics will have on the overall risk profile and exposures to the organization who will succeed. It’s that strategic security leader who will successfully shepherd the organization safely into the future as risks and tactics shift on a near daily basis. It is the ability to see the risk landscape holistically, and react with the appropriate mitigation at the appropriate time, that will give us and our security teams the edge in ensuring that we can be ready for the future of security risks.

This doesn’t mean that tactical skills are not important. It’s critical that team members have the ability to carry out the entire spectrum of security mitigation activities. However, those tactical skills are simply not enough to ensure that the business understands the need for, and supports the implementation of, the security program. And that is where new skills are needed for the entire team.

Skills for the Security Leader

The skills needed to lead a risk-management based security program are not much different than the skills most of our business partners leverage in managing their business functions. They are skills that, until the last 5 to 10 years, have not been strictly required of the security leader. Until recently, security leaders were typically hired to lead organizations because they were highly skilled security tacticians. Why is that a problem? I have had several conversations with incredibly skilled military and law enforcement professionals who struggled with their new environment when they transitioned into corporate security. They were not prepared when they were handed their first budget, or when they had a discussion regarding company financials, or when they were told that the company would not support the enforcement of a basic security requirement.

Acquiring the additional skills necessary to lead a business-focused security organization is not difficult, but this is a situation where a little education can go a long way.

Business Management

• You should have a comprehensive understanding of the enterprise’s business, assets, business drivers, and organizational goals.
• You should understand the business’s footprint, products, services, and mission, both at the holistic organization level, and at the functional level of your internal business partners. Additionally, be familiar with the market you operate in so that you can discuss both the business and security risks.
• You should work across business lines and understand the individual needs of each strategic partner to more fully understand all aspects of the business.
• You should know how to read the company’s financial reports. A basic business web site can give you easy definitions for terms like PBITA, EBITA, Gross Margin, and more. This will have you speaking the same language as your executives very quickly.

Risk Management

• You should have a good understanding of risk models and be competent in the application of risk management principles to your department.
• You can study one of the major risk management models such as ISO’s or ANSI’s, or even specific financial risk management models to be able to confidently discuss the nature of a risk approach. Having the ability to articulate core risk principles and understand their application throughout your business is key to engaging executives in the risk-based conversation.

Project Management:

• You should have the ability to work with stakeholders across multiple departments and functions to ensure that your security projects meet the risk mitigation needs of your stakeholders.
• In the current industry environment of technology-enabled security implementations and networked systems, the ability to work with technical, engineering, and IT groups to implement complex security solutions is invaluable. An understanding of project management principles from an organization such as SIA or PMI, or, even better, a certification, is a step in the right direction.

Communications and Message Management:

• You should have the ability to communicate your security program and its focus on mitigating enterprise risks through protection activities. This will help you ensure a level of understanding of the value of your program at the executive level.
• Reaching both internal and external stakeholders with information about the security program and its results (in terms appropriate to the audience) will help your business partners understand the need for the security program.
• Report writing is a special skill worth acquiring. So much of the activity in security involves communicating incidents, trends, and threats. Crafting quality reports is a critical communication skill. So critical, in fact, that it will have a dedicated article in this series later this year. A well-crafted report can:
o Drive the risk conversation forward.
o Promote risk discussions within and outside of the security function.
o Provide risk and process transparency to ensure awareness of risk thresholds.
o Ensure continued follow-up of identified risk profiles.
o Provide the basis of executive risk metrics reporting.

Change Management

• This skill is key to enable you and your team to truly move from a task-management security focus to a risk-management security focus. The ability to lead, and to demonstrate and model a commitment to change, will drive the message home to your team, your business partners, and your executives. The risk-based approach is a serious business commitment for your team. It demonstrates your readiness to engage engage with the business on its terms.

Skills for the Security Team

The business and risk-management skills for the Security Team are skills for the whole team, including the security functional leader. Team members, of course, need the tactical skills required to carry out their daily security activities and to protect the organization from harm. They must prevent, contain, or recover from security incidents in accordance with the security risk management plan that was agreed to by the organization’s executives.

In order to effectively operate in a risk management environment, your security team will need these skills:
• Be capable of working with all types of people, from line employees to executives, both inside and outside the company.
• Be capable of managing in a fast-moving and continually changing environment and risk landscape. The speed of change in the next decade will only increase as the world enters an unprecedented era of connection and communication. The ability to be nimble and adapt to new situations will be the differentiator between businesses that thrive, survive, or fail (that goes the same for internal functions in those businesses)
• Have a willingness to monitor the global risk environment. It will be necessary to stay up-to-date on new threats and the latest mitigation tactics for those threats.
• Be able to quickly assimilate new skills and knowledge to meet changing demand, allowing them to stay ahead of the curve in business in an effort to support the organization no matter the security need.

The good news? As security professionals, we inherently understand the concept of “risk”. We are surrounded by leaders and business partners who also understand these concepts. To align the differences in our approach, we just need to adjust our understanding, gain a few more skills, and approach our programs with a management mindset similar to the way business looks at risk. The skills needed to interact in a risk-focused business environment are not hard to learn. With a little effort on the part of the security industry, we can all gain the needed skills to sit confidently in the boardroom and talk about security risk management in the same way as other aspects of the business discuss financial risk management, operational risk management, or any other kind of risk management that is integral to the working day.
