Shahroz's New Single KING Dominates as Basketball Anthem

KING is an up-tempo, loud, and energetic record riddled with basketball metaphors. “I wanted to create the ultimate basketball anthem that would be played across arenas and used by basketball players at all levels to get pumped up before games. I had an opportunity to submit the song to NBA2K and the NBA through UnitedMasters, so I couldn’t pass that up.” The song has been used in a promotional video for the new video game NBA 2K20, amassing over 200,000 views. The Portland Trailblazers quoted Shahroz’s line about NBA superstar Damian Lillard in a recent tweet and the song has even been mentioned by NBA players such as Enes Kanter.

Recently, Shahroz partnered with the social media titan BallisLife on a mixtape highlight reel of the #1 ranked basketball player in the class of 2021, Jonathan Kuminga, which featured KING as the soundtrack. Don’t be surprised if you hear the single on a later soundtrack update for NBA 2K20.

Shahroz is best known for his breakout in 2012 when he released a single featuring fellow NJ native, Joe Budden. The song was promoted by DJ Funkmaster Flex and generated a large buzz for the young artist. “I was like 20 years old when we did that record with Budden. He was my favorite rapper at the time, and to be able to hang out and work on music with him in the studio for like 6 hours was surreal. It opened a lot of doors for me.”

Shahroz went on to graduate from law school after having worked at Warner Bros. Records. His knowledge of the music industry led to him creating 92F Entertainment, a music agency that was seeded by Bervann Capital. Through vast archival footage and incisive commentary from major cultural figures, this 78 minute feature documentary traces a pivotal era in world literature.

The film probes the lasting and cultural impact of BARNEY ROSSET, radical Grove Press publisher, free-speech warrior and political activist, one of the most influential cultural impresarios of the last half of the 20th century. Rosset’s fierce mid-century battles against government censorship and surveillance, racial bigotry and the Vietnam war birthed the American 60s counter-culture rebellion, paving the way to today’s unfettered artistic expression.

In an era that is facing social and political upheavals similar to the 50s and 60s, the film is meant to underline the fragility of America's First Amendment rights and civil liberties.

Barney Rosset’s Grove Press/Evergreen Review brought to the reading public an extensive list of the European avant-garde of the 50s and 60s, including European Absurdist dramatists Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco, Jean Genet, Arthur Adamov, and Václav Havel.

The Prague Writers' Festival (PWF) is an annual literary festival in Prague, Czech Republic, taking place every spring since 1991. International literary figures to have appeared at the festival include John Banville, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Salman Rushdie, Irvine Welsh, William Styron and Nadine Gordimer. This year’s writers include Patrizia Cavalli, Michael Cunningham, James Gabbe, Germaine Greer, Arnon Grunberg, Wendy Guerra, Alma Guillermoprieto, Nancy Huston, François Jullien, Sandy Gotham Meehan, and Astrid Myers Rosset.

At his death at 89, Rosset left behind a wall of his memories, encapsulated in intricate vignettes embedded into a 15’ x 22’ wall of his East Village loft. The film uses the vignettes as portals into the formative influences that drove a rebel, war photographer, filmmaker and publisher to an enduring defense of freedom of artistic expression. The loft and the wall have been destroyed by real estate developers undertaking the gentrification of the Lower East Side of NYC. The film is the only record of both.

The documentary has been privately screened at major cultural venues in New York City, San Francisco, Santa Fe, and Paris. Two successful Kickstarters helped fund production of the film.

“One of the reasons I went into maternal-fetal medicine is because I'm compassionate,” says Dr. Dillon. “Most people think obstetrics is a happy specialty, but it can be very devastating. An awful lot of things can go wrong in obstetrics so there's an awful lot of sorrow as well.”

Of course, such tragedies are emotionally fraught, and patients look for someone to blame. Dr. Dillon says if you can develop a relationship, they are more than willing to move through the tragedy in a healthy way, an extremely important part of medicine.

“You need compassion to care for mothers who have been told their baby is not normal or that their baby has died in utero. Prepare the patient, keep them informed along the way and be available for them to work through the sorrow that will come. If you don't have that skill, you might be a technically competent doctor, but you're not doing your patients a service. These patients need a lot of support and a lot of help and a lot of compassion.”

These inspections can also identify potential fireplace/chimney issues to address before they become a more costly repair and save lives.

The National Fire Protection Association Standard (NFPA) 211 says, "Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary." This is the national safety standard – the standard takes into account the fact that even if you don't use your chimney often animals building nests in the chimney and/or deterioration of fireplace/chimney could still deem it unsafe to use.

The Facts About Chimney Fires
While a fireplace adds architectural character and value to your home, its real function is to carry dangerous flue gases safely out of your home. If not properly maintained the fireplace and chimney can cause chimney fires, destroy homes and kill occupants.

Indications of a chimney fire have been described as creating:
• loud cracking and popping noise
• a lot of dense smoke, and
• an intense, hot smell

You may see flames or dense smoke shoot from the top of the chimney and/or hear a low rumbling sound (such as the sound of a freight train). However, most chimney fires go undetected as they are slow-burning – they don’t have enough air or have enough fuel to be noticeable yet can still reach a very high temperature and cause structural damage. Most of these are primarily only detected by a chimney inspection.

Signs that You’ve Had a Chimney Fire
Given the additional risks of using a fireplace after a chimney fire occurred, here are signs that a professional chimney sweep will look for during inspection:
• “Puffy” or “honey combed” creosote
• Creosote flakes found on the roof or ground
• Roofing material damaged from hot creosote
• Cracks in exterior masonry
• Evidence of smoke escaping through mortar joints of masonry (brick, stone, etc) or clay tile liners
• Cracked or collapsed clay flue tiles
• Discolored and/or warped metal flue pipe or chimney cap
• Warped metal of the damper and/or metal smoke chamber connector pipe of a prefab (factory-built metal fireplace/chimney)

Creosote is black or brown in color and can be crusty and flaky, a tar-like substance, drippy and sticky, or shiny and hardened. It typically builds up on chimney flue liners and is typically due to restricted air supply, cool chimney temperatures, or burning unseasoned wood. All forms can actually occur in the same chimney – and whatever form it takes creosote is highly combustible.

When it comes to sweeping the chimney, the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends that open masonry fireplaces should be swept at 1/8 inch of sooty buildup, and sooner if there is any glaze present in the system. Even at a small 1/8” inch buildup it’s enough fuel buildup to cause a chimney fire and possible death of occupants. For prefabs (factory-built fireplaces) – they should be swept when any appreciable buildup occurs given the buildup is acidic and can easily shorten the life of the fireplace.
