He opened the discussion to the panelists by posing the question as to where they see the potential for growth in India, given that it is slated to be the third-largest fintech market in the world. The panel rightly pointed out that the COVID-19 situation is acting as a catalyst to speed up the fintech space and that the need for partnerships between fintech and banking is now more important than ever. Agreeing with the panelists, David added that – being well aware of the need for alliances – Jianpu has tied up with over 2000 financial institutions in the past 8 to 9 years.

Mr. Ye then steered the discussion towards how government regulations would affect digital transformation to serve SMEs and other customers. The view echoed by the participants was very positive in this regard. They perceived the regulations not as being limiting but as confidence-building measures where consumers would be more inclined to leverage the digital route. Also, the pace at which the regulations surrounding fintech are being passed is a sign that the government is moving in the desirable direction. Mr. Ye voiced his optimism at these regulations, expressing his hope that the move would attract investments in the sector from North America, China, and the rest of the world.

Mr. Ye then turned the discussion towards credit risk at these unprecedented times and the credit crunch in the Indian financial sector, especially in light of the recent Yes Bank fiasco. Risk being a hot topic of discussion, the panel was quick to call attention to the fact that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had swiftly stepped in to mitigate the problem.
The panel members also pointed out that the big banks were quick in extending help to fintechs that were associated with Yes Bank, enabling them to port their business overnight. They remarked that the RBI does not allow banks to fail in the country because it is a matter of public trust.

Comparing the fintech spaces in India, China and South-East Asia, Mr. Ye highlighted that each of these markets is moving forward but at different paces, owing to factors such as rates of e-commerce proliferation, internet adoption, and regulatory framework.

Coming back to the delinquency rates, it was stated that they would be highly dependent on the quality of borrowers. However, the panel pointed out that India has one of the lowest delinquency rates when it comes to retail lending.

It was felt that, in the current scenario, risk stratification by leveraging technology is a winner. Fintechs that took the data and algorithmic route to rate the creditworthiness of the borrowers are now witnessing that their models are a success. Borrowers chosen by these algorithms are displaying resilience at this tough time by being prompt in their repayments. This moment of truth makes the perfect case for investors to look at the Indian fintech sector in the right light.

In conclusion, it was felt that the winners in the market after the pandemic will be those who leverage data efficiently. The delinquency levels will rise slightly in the near future, but they will still be range-bound. It was highlighted that the credit penetration in India is still a few years behind the ones seen in countries like China, which should be viewed as the pent-up demand for credit, which will soon kick in.

42% of US consumers think news about the seriousness of COVID-19 is “exaggerated” – GfK

92% consider themselves well informed about COVID-19 – but 67% say it is becoming hard to tell “fake” virus news from real

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, April 30, 2020 / — While most of the US remains on some form of lockdown this week, many Americans say they still have doubts about the news they are receiving on COVID-19.

In a new GfK study, four in ten Americans (42%) agree either strongly or somewhat with the statement, “I think the news about the seriousness of coronavirus has been exaggerated.” This includes half (49%) of all US men – compared to just 35% of women. Men are also twice as likely as women to strongly agree that news about the virus is exaggerated (23% vs 12%).

Other groups with a 50% or greater rate of agreement (strongly or somewhat) are US consumers who:
• are in the 36-to-50 age range: 50% (versus 31% of those 51 to 65)
• have some level of higher education: 50% (versus 38% of those with lower education levels)
• reside in large urban metropolises: 59% (versus 32% for those in small cities)

The research – conducted April 24th to 27th as part of GfK’s global Consumer Pulse studies – also shows that 67% of Americans feel strongly or somewhat that, “When people talk about coronavirus, it’s getting harder to distinguish between accurate news and fake news.”

Yet 92% consider themselves well-informed about the virus—up slightly from 88% in the previous wave of the study. Exploring specific sources of news, 60% of Americans say they “feel better informed about coronavirus because of news I get from the Internet.” This is below television (66%) but above newspapers (58%) and the radio (51%).

GfK’s Consumer Pulse research covers 30 countries, allowing brands and marketers to #MasterTheCrisis by understanding consumer attitudes, behavior, purchase intent, media consumption, and more – both now and in the future. The research reveals changes in demand for goods and services, as well as which sectors and channels present risks or opportunities, so that companies can respond with confidence and come out of the crisis stronger, better positioned, and closer to consumers than before.

As part of this research, GfK interviewed a representative sample of 1,019 US consumers (ages 15 and up) during the week of April 24 to 27, 2020.

In your experience, what are the 5 things each of us can do to help solve the Loneliness Epidemic? Please give a story or an example for each.

Loneliness is not an epidemic that has to affect our lives. In fact, I believe there are five things that each one of us can do to go through this process and really kick loneliness out of our lives.

1. Being known by God is the first thing. You may not agree with this premise, but you are here reading an article from a pastor. The first way to deter loneliness in our lives is to be known and loved by God. And here is the greatest thing about this first step: it’s not actually a step we have to take or make happen. The truth is, it’s already happened. God knows each and every one of us and He loves us unconditionally. Truly all we need to do is acknowledge and accept this love. Maybe you have never had a conversation with God, maybe you do not know where to start. But can I encourage you to start with a simple sentence? Just say “God can you let me know you know me? “Can you let me know you love me?” It’s a simple prayer but I truly believe in a God that hears you. I believe if you pray that prayer with faith in your heart, He is going to do things in your life, so you are known and loved by God.

2. Simply be your authentic self. I’ve got to be honest, as a​ ​woman​ in my forties​, I realize this is a lifetime journey. It changes with seasons and some seasons are easier. Some seasons it takes a little more effort, but if I don’t want to live a life of loneliness, I have to be the person I am uniquely designed to be. I can’t try to be a cheap imitation of somebody else. I know it’s​​ cliché, but only I can be the very best me there is. Brace yourself for a total mom brag. We have three kids, two boys who are 15 and 13, and our baby girl is 11. Just this past year our baby girl, Grace, moved to a brand-new school as a fifth-grader which is the oldest grade in her elementary school. Recently we had our parent-teacher conference at this new school with her new teacher and I received the greatest mom compliment I’ve ever received. Her teacher said, “you know Grace, she really knows who she is.” When she said that I thought, I want to know that for me personally for my whole life. I not only want to protect that in my daughter but also in me. We would like to explore and flesh out the trait of resilience. How would you define resilience? What do you believe are the characteristics or traits of resilient people?

Resilience is when you make the decision that you will achieve your goal no matter what battles lie ahead, and you will continue to get up no matter how many times you are knocked down.

Resilient people…

…do not give up. You most likely have heard the Japanese proverb, “Fall down seven times, stand up eight.” No matter how many times you knock down a resilient person, they are always going to get back up.
…are always focused on their ultimate purpose — their “why”, which is often much larger than themselves. They know that if they give up, they are not only letting themselves down, they are letting many others down, as well.
… internalize their pain and reframe it into passion. We all have problems; we all have dark days. What matters is how we respond to these challenges.
…have desire. Simply stated, they want it more. They want it so bad that they are constantly focused on the end goal, and they put in the action to continue pursuing their objectives no matter what obstacles arise.
…are positive and always look at a situation in the following terms: ’What can this failure help me learn?’ or ‘What lesson can it teach me?’ rather than, ‘Why is this happening to me?’

When you think of resilience, which person comes to mind? Can you explain why you chose that person?

Inky Johnson comes to mind right away.

This is a man who worked ridiculously hard while growing up to earn a college football scholarship, and in his last season before he most likely would have been a highly sought-after NFL draft pick, he suffered a career ending injury that paralyzed his right arm. He could have sat there and felt sorry for himself, but did he? No. He kept his chin up and is now one of the best-known motivational speakers out there. He had his entire life’s pursuit derailed, and instead of allowing this injury to get him down, he leveraged it and used his situation to his advantage.

I remember listening to motivational talks of his before some of my football practices or before workouts while I was a student at Iowa Central Community College before my transfer to the University of Iowa, and his talks gave me the encouragement I needed to keep pushing on even when I didn’t want to. If he could take such a devastating situation and turn it into a positive, I decided that I had absolutely no reason not to give it my all each day.

LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, April 29, 2020 / — The novel coronavirus is creating devastation not only to individual’s health, but also to the entire criminal justice system. According to legal experts, the pandemic will have repercussions for a criminal defendants’ right to a speedy trial under the Sixth Amendment of the Constitution. If that right is found to be violated, a defendant’s conviction or sentence can be set aside. Most states have statutory speedy trial limits, however the impact of the virus is going to overwhelm dockets in courthouses all over the country. Vincent Imhoff, Managing Director of Imhoff & Associates, and Shannon Leis, Managing Attorney at Imhoff & Associates, certainly are frustrated by the current state the criminal justice system is in. They too agree that some constitution violations are most certainly being enacted as we speak. The two co-authored an article detailing such specifics in the Imhoff & Associates Newsletter. “In California, the Chief Justice and the Judicial Council voted unanimously to extend what qualifies as a speedy trial during the COVID-19 pandemic," states the Imhoff & Associates Newsletter. “As a result, criminal defendants now face longer waits in pretrial detention and for key hearings. Deadlines for a felony defendant to appear in court extends from 48 hours to 7 days, for a preliminary hearing to be held from 10 days to 30 days, for a speedy trial for an additional 60 days. These changes are to remain in effect even after the emergency ends for an additional 90 days. Imagine being arrested and sitting in jail for an entire week before seeing a judge regarding release.”

The Imhoff & Associates Newsletter continues, “While extensions of time may be necessary in some cases, these blanket time extensions are a betrayal of justice and an attack on fundamental due process rights."

Many federal and state courts have suspended or postponed criminal jury trials. Among the states most seriously affected by the pandemic is New York, where state courts responded by ordering courts to finish pending criminal and civil trials while delaying new trials until further notice. In Washington state, multiple courts suspended or delayed trials.

Due entirely to the pandemic, there still seems to be more breaches to be aware of than solely Sixth Amendment rights. The pandemic is resulting in compromised Fifth and Eighth Amendment rights of defendants in custody as well. At a time when the government is urging Americans to follow CDC guidelines, almost every single guideline is being violated in its jails and prisons. The crowded and shared living spaces make social distancing virtually impossible. Detainees are not provided masks, and living spaces are not properly cleaned and sanitized. COVID-19 is spreading through jails and prisons like wildfire and deaths are already being reported. The Fifth Amendment forbids any form of punishment for those held in pretrial detention and the Eighth Amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. Although all might seem hopeless, Vincent and Shannon believe that the system can turn around with a serious dedication to preserving rights and that a solution is on the horizon.

“We must acknowledge these attacks on fundamental constitutional rights and fight for better standards to be implemented. We should be alarmed and fiercely resist any effort to normalize attacks on due process rights where less offensive means are available to address an issue,” concludes the Imhoff & Associates Newsletter. “With trials suspended and arrests down, judges should have sufficient time to conduct video arraignments and pretrial hearings. Every effort should be made to respect and afford due process. The consequences for those who are incarcerated could not be graver. Awaiting trial or serving a sentence should not amount to a death sentence. It is our duty to demand better.”
