Release: County sees 5.9 percent sales tax increase in 2017
Montgomery County Increase Largest in the Mohawk Valley Region
>FONDA - County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort announced Monday that Montgomery County's sales tax figures increased 5.9 percent from 2016 to 2017. Montgomery County's figures were the highest year-over-year percentage change among counties in the Mohawk Valley, according to a report from the New York State Comptroller's Office. In 2016, sales tax collections were $27,806,149. The figured increased to $29,450,192 in 2017.
"This is positive news," Ossenfort said. "Hopefully this trend will continue into 2018."
Ossenfort noted that rising fuel prices and better than anticipated retail sales during the holiday season are two contributing factors to the sales tax increase. During the fourth quarter, the county's sales tax revenues were up by 14 percent compared to the same period last year.
